Civil Service Salary and Benefits

The following are general observations.  For details specific to your job, check with the human resources/personnel department for the agency that you want to work for.

Salary

A major concern of a private industry job seeker is the salary.  For the majority of government jobs, the salary is set and non-negotiable.  Further, there are typically multiple salary levels that you can reach once you pass probation and with an established time period on the job. (usually a year).

You’ll find that with a number of agencies, the salaries for entry level and working level jobs are higher than for similar jobs in private industry.  This may be especially true for agencies that have unionized labor.  Salaries for management and executive management jobs are typically lower that similar jobs in private industry.  Further, there are seldom bonuses for management and executive management positions.  The trade off is a defined benefit retirement plan often with annual cost of living increases and typically some level of healthcare..

Vacation and Personal Time Off

Vacation and Personal Time Off will vary by agency.  In a number of instances, employees may be able to accumulate vacation and/or Personal Time Off in amounts higher than in private industry.

Holidays

Holiday schedules are usually more similar to the Federal schedule than the schedules found in private industry.  In many instances, the holiday schedules are more generous than private industry.

Health Benefits

One of the best benefits of a government job is that the vast majority of agencies offer

health care.  The level will vary and in some instances with a unionized workforce, the union will also offer a healthcare option for their membership.  If the agency offers a Health Savings Account, consider taking advantage of the opportunity.

Note: All of the above are general observations.  The specific salary and benefits for the job(s) that you’re applying for may vary.  Please check with the agency to verify your salary and benefits.
